Opera: Its Origins and Early Development

The course will examine opera's origins and subsequent development (1598-1800) as a musical and dramatic form, with a focus on why some early customs endured through subsequent periods of operatic history, while others were abandoned. There will be illustrative musical examples, but no background in music theory is required. Staging, production and literary elements will be explored.
