Navigating Senior Living Options in the Charlottesville Area

This course will provide a comprehensive look at the various options available to those who are planning for, have an interest in, or a need for, senior living services. A variety of professionals experienced in the weekly topics will present. Class 1: Aging statistics and trends, and defining the language and terminology used in senior living; Class 2: Options for senior living communities, independent living communities, and continuing-care retirement communities; Class 3: Assisted living communities, geriatric care management, home health care agencies, adult day care, and Alzheimer’s/memory care; Class 4: Rehabilitation facilities and nursing home options, including in-patient and out-patient rehab services and the difference between skilled care and long-term nursing care; Class 5: Medicare and Medicaid benefits, long-term care insurance, and veteran’s benefits. Note: This course does not meet on Wednesday, November 21.

Instructor Bio:

Shelli Schinkus has 13 years of experience working in sales and marketing for retirement communities and has an AAS in Hospitality Management and an ADN in nursing. She attributes her passion for retirement communities to her own experience recovering from a car accident at a skilled nursing/rehabilitation facility. The experience gave her a genuine understanding of the peace of mind that senior communities provide residents.
