An Introduction to the US Health Care System

This course will examine the evolution of the US health care system from a health-policy and health-values perspective, with an emphasis on the current health system. Topics include issues surrounding the financing, organization, and delivery of health care, including access, coverage, cost, and quality of health services. The course will also examine the influence of medical and nonmedical determinants of health, review of changes to the Affordable Care Act under the Trump Administration, and provide an analysis of the respective roles of government and the private sector in regulating health care.

Instructor Bio:

Carolyn Long Engelhard is a health policy analyst and holds the academic rank of Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Professor Engelhard’s academic activities include analyzing and monitoring changes in health policy at the federal and state governmental levels and teaching in both the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Medicine.
