Discussion Group - The Making of Modern Iran
Modern societies have socio-economic, historic and religious threads that define them and provide a provide insights necessary for understanding. Modern Iran is no exception and our discussion group will identify some of those threads and then seek to understand them.
Facilitator: Meredith LoBello spent an undergraduate junior year at Pahlavi University in Shiraz, Iran and holds an MA in Iranian Studies from the University of Toronto. He taught at Tehran University and worked in Iran from 1973 through early 1979. He has since audited a number of courses in Farsi at UVA. These include courses on Islamic philosophy and Iranian and Persian literature.
Participants should be prepared to read and discuss a minimum of thirty (preassigned) pages in advance of each session. The required text is Iran a Modern History by Abbas Amanat.
