Understanding Iran and Iranians
For years, Iran has been represented as a rogue nation and threat to Western allies and interests in the Middle East. Unfortunately, since 1979, the US has not had trained diplomats there, able to report without bias. The reporters who visit don’t speak Farsi and are closely monitored. Those who criticize are not invited back. Most other self-styled experts have not traveled to, or within Iran—certainly since 1979. The purpose of this course is to objectively inform about the people and country of Iran—its history, geography, culture, existential challenges—and also constructive potential.
Since 1946, Laylin has been associated with Iran and Iranians. He lived there 15 years, in private business, between 1959 and 1979. Since 2006, he has visited often and traveled extensively throughout. Bicultural, with Iranian family, Laylin is socially/culturally accepted and well-connected. He participates in scientific information exchanges between the US and Iran.
