Jan Van Eyck Invents Realistic Painting
Jan Van Eyck (1390-1441) did not invent oil painting, but he perfected it while inventing realism. His Ghent altarpiece is the greatest painting of all time. He dominated Netherlandish painting for centuries, with brilliant portraits and religious subjects. In this slide-illustrated course, we will discuss his career and all his paintings, including the masterpieces Virgin with Chancellor Rolin and Arnolfini Wedding.
Note: This course does not meet on Thursday, November 23.
Don Fry, an independent writing coach, taught medieval English at the University of Virginia and Stony Brook University, and then shifted to teaching and reforming journalism. He has taught over 10,000 writers to write better, faster, and with less agony. Don has published over 20 books, most recently Writing Your Way: Creating a Writing Process That Works for You (Cincinnati: Writers Digest, 2012). He has taught 11 OLLI courses in art for the sheer fun of it.
Any books on Van Eyck with lots of pictures, especially Hubert and Jan Van Eyck by Elisabeth Dhanens.
