An Introduction to the US Health Care System

This course will examine the evolution of the US health care system from a health-policy and health-values perspective, with an emphasis on the current health system. Topics include issues surrounding the financing, organization, and delivery of health care, including access, coverage, cost, and quality of health services; the influence of medical and nonmedical determinants of health; review of the new health-care reform law; and an analysis of the respective roles of government and the private sector in regulating health care.
Note: This course does not meet on Wednesday, November 22.

Instructor Bio:

Carolyn Long Engelhard directs the health policy program in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Professor Engelhard’s academic activities include analyzing and monitoring changes in health policy at the federal and state governmental levels and teaching in both the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Medicine.
