What is Populism?
Donald Trump, Silvio Berlusconi, Marine Le Pen, and Hugo Chavez are all populists who have recently risen and even ruled in their countries across the globe. Ivan Krastev claims that we live in an ‘Age of Populism.’ But what is populism? This course will examine the causes of the rise of populism in the US, Europe, and Latin America. We shall also try to define a theory of populism and seek to determine if it has any ideological content, or is a sign of severe distress with the existing political system and as such a threat to democracy.
