The Business of Fun

This course will explore the American Amusement Business from Coney Island to Disney and the modern age. Topics include thematic treatments, theatrical design, spectacle and show, group dynamics, park operations, financial metrics, attraction development, brand, communications, and the unparalleled power of experience as a context for learning.

Instructor Bio:

Doug Minerd is an accomplished composer, producer and theme park executive with more than 30 years’ experience working for some of America’s most historic, best-known, and loved attractions including Cedar Point, Busch Gardens, SeaWorld, and Sesame Place. Production credits include hundreds of shows, events and attractions at 11 major parks nationwide. Doug has written and produced music and shows for theme parks, media, off-Broadway and regional theater. Recent work includes projects with Broadway Director BT McNicholl, the Sesame Workshop, Busch Gardens, and Broadway talents John Tartaglia, Ann-Marie Milazzo and Michael Shawn Lewis. Doug served as Music Director/Director for Busch Gardens from 1982-1999 and recently retired from corporate life as Vice President of Entertainment for SeaWorld (San Diego/San Antonio).
