Scrivened in Delight: A Selection of Poems by Wallace Stevens
Lawyer and Pulitzer Prize winning poet, Wallace Stevens sought “a substitute for religion” and concluded that “poetry is a renovation of experience . . . a response to the daily necessity of getting the world right.” As I return to him over the years, I find new depths in his work. Intellectual, philosophical, playful, enigmatic, and profound, Stevens presents a rich celebration of this world, both in light and in shadow. We will, of course, touch on such poetic elements as imagery, rhyme, and figures of speech; however, our main focus will be a conversation about our own experiences with the poems as we read them together.
